The Miracle of the Sun: Tens of Thousands of Witnesses, Not a Single Instrument
By first light on 13 October 1917 the muddy roads into the Serra de Aire were already choked with people. Barefoot farmers, women with infants on their hips, old men leaning on sticks, a scattering of the merely curious and the openly hostile, all of them pressing toward a shallow, waterlogged hollow called the Cova da Iria, near a village most Portuguese could not have found on a map a year earlier. It had rained since dawn, a cold Atlantic rain that turned the fields to sludge and soaked the pilgrims to the bone. Some had walked for two or three days. They had come because three shepherd children had promised that on this day, at this hour, the lady who spoke to them would give the world a sign so that everyone would believe.
The children were Lucia dos Santos, ten years old, and her younger cousins Francisco and Jacinta Marto, aged nine and seven. Since 13 May they had described a radiant woman appearing above a small holm oak on the thirteenth of each month, and word had spread across the region and then the country. Most estimates place the crowd that gathered in the Cova between 30,000 and 70,000, a staggering number for rural Portugal in the middle of a world war. Not all were devout. Reporters had travelled from Lisbon expecting to record either a fraud or a riot, and the local authorities, wary of religious fervour under an aggressively secular republic, had made no secret of their contempt.
The road to that morning had not been smooth. Through the summer the apparitions had drawn swelling crowds and official alarm, and in August the administrator of the district of Ourem, Artur Santos, a fervent anticlerical, had the three children seized and held for two days, reportedly threatening them with death in boiling oil to wring out a confession of fraud. They gave none. When the visions were said to resume in September, the lady was reported to have reaffirmed the promise of a miracle in October. By then the affair had become a public test of nerve between a devout peasantry and a Republic determined to expose superstition. That is the charged atmosphere into which the crowds poured on the thirteenth.
At around midday, solar noon, the rain stopped, the heavy cloud pulled apart, and the sun appeared as a strange, dull disc that people said they could look at directly without pain, like a plate of frosted silver. Then it seemed to move. Thousands reported that it spun on itself, flinging out great wheels of colour that stained the ground, the faces and the clothing of the crowd in reds, blues and violets. After some minutes it appeared to tremble, lurch, and plunge in a zigzag toward the earth, as though it would crash into the multitude. People screamed, wept, fell to their knees in the mud and cried out that the world was ending. Then, they said, it climbed back to its place. The whole episode is generally reported to have lasted about ten minutes. Many pilgrims later insisted their rain soaked clothes were dry.
The testimony did not come only from believers. Avelino de Almeida was a senior editor and star reporter of O Seculo, the largest daily in Portugal and an organ of the anticlerical Republican movement, founded in 1881 with no love for the Church. That August he had published a mocking, satirical piece about the apparitions. His report, printed on 15 October, described the sun as a plate of dull silver at which the vast crowd could stare without discomfort, dancing in what he called a violent and convulsive movement. When his own secular colleagues rounded on him for it, he did not retract. He renewed his testimony in print.
Other accounts came from educated observers who wrote them down within weeks. A young lawyer, Jose Maria de Almeida Garrett, left a long and careful description of the sun whirling and seeming to loosen itself from the sky and advance. The priest Manuel Nunes Formigao, who had approached the events as a cautious investigator, said the incomparable spectacle lasted about ten minutes. Distance also enters the record: the Reverend Joaquim Lourenco, then a boy in Alburitel some eighteen kilometres away, described the same ball of snow revolving and dropping, and he had gone to no apparition at all.
The other half of the record is equally documented. No astronomical observatory anywhere on Earth registered any solar anomaly on 13 October 1917. Nor did every person in the Cova report the same thing. Some who stood in that very field said they saw nothing unusual at all, only a weeping, kneeling crowd around them. Among those who did see something, the descriptions vary: some spoke of a sun spinning like a wheel of fireworks, others of a disc that plunged and recovered more than once, others were struck mainly by the shifting colours washing over the landscape, and a few sober witnesses recorded only that the clouds parted and the sun shone with unusual clarity.
Photography adds a further detail. Hundreds of people were present with cameras, and press photographers were in the crowd. The surviving images show pilgrims looking upward, hats in hand, faces raised. No authenticated photograph of a moving or spinning sun exists.
The Church itself was in no hurry. Only after a canonical inquiry lasting years did the Bishop of Leiria, Jose Alves Correia da Silva, declare the visions worthy of belief, on 13 October 1930, thirteen years after the event. Catholic teaching binds no one to accept a private revelation, and the declaration formally permitted devotion rather than requiring assent. Fatima went on to become one of the largest Marian pilgrimage sites in the world, and the three children were later honoured by the Church, but the events of that October afternoon were never made an article of faith.
Conclusions and Open Questions
One point is not in dispute. The sun itself did not move. Had it done so, half the planet would have witnessed it and the consequences would have been catastrophic, and no observatory recorded anything at all. Whatever tens of thousands of people described happened in the sky above the Cova da Iria, or in the eyes and minds of those watching, and not in the solar system. Beyond that, the explanations diverge.
The physicist Auguste Meessen argued that prolonged staring at the sun bleaches the light sensitive cells of the retina and produces vivid after images and the illusion of movement and colour, which a primed crowd would read as a dancing sun. It is a strong account of the optics. Its weakness is that the phenomenon reportedly began when the sun broke through cloud, before most people had been staring, and after images do not obviously explain an experience described from many kilometres away.
The Scottish writer Steuart Campbell proposed in 1989, in the Journal of Meteorology, that a cloud of stratospheric dust in front of the sun could have dimmed it and tinted it in the colours reported. It elegantly explains the muted disc people could look at. It strains to explain the violent plunging motion, and no independent record of such a dust event survives. The investigator Joe Nickell attributed the whole to a convergence of optical effects, a possible sundog, and retinal distortion from staring at intense light. Broad and plausible, it is also loose: a sundog is a fixed bright patch, not a careening disc, and the list reads more like a menu of possibilities than a single mechanism.
Others locate the event not in the sky but in the crowd. Benjamin Radford emphasized suggestion, expectation and pareidolia, the readiness of thousands promised a miracle at a set hour to perceive one and to reinforce one another cry by cry. It is a well documented psychological mechanism. Its limit is that suggestion does not easily reach a hostile witness eighteen kilometres away, or explain why so many reports converge on rotation and colour. Kevin McClure, once editor of an anomalistics journal, argued the opposite from the same evidence: that the accounts are genuinely inconsistent, and that this incoherence undermines the idea of one shared objective event. The religion scholar Lisa Schwebel pressed the photographic point, and Brian Dunning made the same observation from the other side, noting that the surviving photographs show only a crowd staring upward at an ordinary sky.
Some argue that the honest answer lies in the friction between these accounts rather than in any one of them. On this reading an ordinary atmospheric event, thinning cloud and refracted light, perhaps high dust, produced a sun that could be safely watched and appeared to shimmer, and that rare but natural sight fell upon a vast crowd strung to the highest pitch of expectation at the exact hour they had been told to expect a wonder. Optics supplied the stimulus, psychology organized it into a shared story, and memory sharpened the drama over the following decades. The weakness of this reconstruction is that it remains speculation rather than proof, and it does not address the element believers point to most firmly: the timing, foretold months in advance, to the day and the hour.
The open questions are therefore precise. Why do the accounts converge so tightly on rotation and colour if nothing objective occurred? Why do they diverge in detail if something objective did? Why did a few people in the middle of the field see nothing? Why is there no photograph? And how was the date fixed months earlier? More than a century later, the record still furnishes honest arguments to believers and to sceptics alike, and refuses to hand final victory to either.
