STENDEC: The Word an Airliner Sent Four Minutes Before It Hit a Glacier

At 5:41 on the afternoon of 2 August 1947, a radio operator at Los Cerrillos airfield outside Santiago pressed his headphones closer and copied a burst of Morse code falling out of the sky over the Andes. The first part was routine: the British airliner Star Dust reported an estimated arrival time of 17:45. Then came seven letters that meant nothing in any code the operator knew. STENDEC.

He tapped back a request to repeat. The answer came twice, fast and clean, with no hesitation in the sending hand: STENDEC. STENDEC.

Four minutes later the aircraft should have crossed the field boundary and begun its approach. Nothing came. No emergency call, no engine noise over the mountains, no aircraft. Star Dust and the eleven people aboard vanished so completely that for fifty-one years there was not one confirmed piece of it anywhere on earth.

The aircraft was an Avro Lancastrian, registration G-AGWH, a Lancaster bomber stripped of its gun turrets and fitted with seats. British South American Airways flew them on the long southern routes, and Star Dust was on the last leg of a journey that had begun in London on 29 July. Buenos Aires to Santiago is a short hop by the standards of that route, three and a half hours, but the wall in the middle of it is the Andes, and in 1947 crossing them meant climbing to 24,000 feet in an unpressurised cabin and flying on instruments through cloud with no radar, no ground beacons in the high passes, and navigation by dead reckoning: known heading, known airspeed, known time, therefore known position.

The crew were not amateurs. Captain Reginald Cook had flown bombers through the war and carried the Distinguished Service Order and the Distinguished Flying Cross. First Officer Norman Hilton Cook and Second Officer Donald Checklin were also RAF veterans. The radio operator, Dennis Harmer, had spent the war and the peace that followed at a Morse key. The flight attendant, Iris Evans, had been a chief petty officer in the Women's Royal Naval Service. They carried six passengers, five men and one woman, of British, Swiss, German and Palestinian nationality. One of the men was a King's Messenger, a British diplomatic courier, and he was travelling with a bag.

That single detail did more damage to the truth than anything else in the case. When an aircraft carrying a diplomatic courier evaporates, the story writes itself.

Air Vice Marshal Don Bennett, who ran the airline and who had founded the RAF's Pathfinder Force during the war, personally directed a five-day search. Argentine and Chilean teams flew the passes. Airline crews looked down on every crossing for months afterwards. An amateur radio operator reported catching a faint SOS, and hope flared and died. Nothing was found. Not a wing, not a scrap of fabric, not a body.

So people filled the empty space themselves. Sabotage, to destroy the courier's documents. A hijacking. Gold in the hold. And later, once the vocabulary of the 1950s existed to describe such things, abduction by something not of this world, a theory that fed almost entirely on seven letters nobody could read.

The mountain gave the answer back in pieces, and it took its time about it.

In January 1998 two Argentine climbers working their way up Mount Tupungato, a 6,570-metre volcano near the Chilean border, found metal lying on the glacier at around 4,600 metres. It was a Rolls-Royce Merlin engine. Around it lay twisted aluminium and shreds of clothing. In 2000 an Argentine Army expedition went up properly and brought down more: a propeller, wheels, one of them with its tyre still inflated after half a century under the ice. And human remains, preserved in a way that made the recovery teams go quiet. Three torsos. A foot inside an ankle boot. A hand with the nails still manicured.

By 2002, DNA testing had put names to five of the eight British victims.

The wreckage answered the question the searchers of 1947 could not. The propeller blades were bent in the pattern that only forms when an engine is turning at close to cruising power at the moment of impact. The undercarriage was retracted. This was not an aircraft in trouble, not a crew fighting a fire or an engine failure or hunting for somewhere to put down. Star Dust flew into the mountain at speed, under full control, with nobody aboard aware that a mountain was there.

The explanation that fits is a phenomenon which in August 1947 had a name but almost no operational meaning: the jet stream. At 24,000 feet, inside cloud, Star Dust would have been sitting in a river of air moving against it at a speed nobody in that cockpit had any instrument to measure. Dead reckoning assumes the wind you were briefed about. The crew flew the heading, watched the clock, and calculated that they had crossed the ridge line and were over the Chilean plain with Santiago ahead of them. They began the descent that Harmer had just announced to Santiago. They were in fact still east of the crest, letting down into the top of the Tupungato glacier.

The impact was into a near-vertical snowfield, and it brought down an avalanche that buried everything within seconds. That is why five days of searching by men who knew exactly what they were doing turned up nothing at all. The wreck was already under the ice, and the glacier then carried it slowly downhill for fifty years before delivering the first fragments to a height where a climber could trip over them. An Argentine Air Force review in 2000 cleared Captain Cook, citing heavy snow and cloud that made it impossible for the crew to fix their position.

That closed the disappearance. It did not close STENDEC.

Conclusions and Open Questions

The crash itself is now about as well explained as a 1947 accident can be. What survives is a single word, sent three times by a professional operator who by every account was sending cleanly and quickly, four minutes before he died.

The oldest and most popular idea is that STENDEC is an anagram of DESCENT, and that Harmer, hypoxic at 24,000 feet in an unpressurised aircraft, scrambled the letters of a word he meant to send. Oxygen starvation does produce exactly that class of error, and the aircraft was in fact about to descend. The weakness is severe. He sent it three times, identically, at speed, when asked to repeat. Hypoxic scrambling is not usually that consistent, and a confused sender is normally a slow and ragged sender. When the BBC's Horizon devoted a programme to the case in 2000, the production received hundreds of proposed solutions from viewers, and concluded that none of them, the anagram included, actually held up.

The most technically serious proposal treats STENDEC not as a word at all but as a reading error. Morse is a stream of dots and dashes, and the boundaries between letters live in the spacing, not in the sounds. Written as one continuous sequence, STENDEC is identical to SCTI AR, SCTI being the code for Los Cerrillos and AR being the standard Morse sign for end of message. On this reading Harmer sent an entirely normal sign-off, the Chilean operator broke the stream at the wrong points, and the whole mystery is an artefact of one man's ear at one moment. Its strength is that it requires no unusual behaviour from anybody. Its weakness is that the operator asked for a repeat, listened twice more, and copied the same nonsense every time, which is a great deal of consistent mishearing. A related variant notes that STENDEC is a single character away from the call sign of Valparaiso, 110 kilometres to the north.

Others have read the word as an acronym, with candidates ranging from the plausible to the ridiculous, none of which has ever been shown to have been in use at British South American Airways or anywhere else in commercial aviation at the time. That is the hard limit on the acronym theory. An abbreviation only functions if the receiving station has met it before, and no document has yet been produced in which STENDEC appears anywhere except in the transcript of this one flight.

There is also a quieter possibility, one that resists being written up because nothing can be done with it: that the word meant something ordinary and private, a habit or a shorthand between two operators, and that its meaning died with the only people who understood it. Some BSAA pilots never accepted the jet stream account either. They argued that the wind may have brought the aircraft down in some other way, and recalled being warned never to enter cloud over the mountains at all, because the turbulence and the icing were too great a risk.

What remains is a strange balance. The disappearance, which for fifty-one years looked like the impossible part of the story, turned out to be a navigational error compounded by a glacier that swallowed the evidence. The word, which looked like a detail, is the part still open. Somewhere in the copied traffic of a Chilean airfield on a winter afternoon sit seven letters left behind by a flight that had four minutes to live, and the likeliest explanation is not that they carry a secret. It is that they carry nothing at all: a smudge in the record, sent clearly, received wrongly, and preserved forever because of what happened next.
