The Bloop: The Ocean's Loudest Mystery and the Ice That Solved It

In the summer of 1997, analysts at the Pacific Marine Environmental Laboratory in Newport, Oregon, part of the United States National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, were watching the slow scroll of spectrograms, the visual record of noise in the deep ocean, when a signal appeared that matched nothing in their catalogues. It was an ultra low frequency rumble that rose in pitch over roughly a minute, and it was extraordinarily loud. Hydrophones separated by more than 5,000 kilometres, an entire ocean apart, had recorded it at the same time. When technicians sped the recording up sixteen times to lift it into the range of human hearing, it resolved into a strange, wet, rising gulp. Someone called it the Bloop, and the name stayed.

The signal was not a single freak event. NOAA's acoustic monitoring programme recorded it several times during the summer of 1997 on the autonomous hydrophones of the Equatorial Pacific array, which is what allowed the analysts to triangulate an approximate source position rather than simply note an oddity on one instrument. The laboratory also made its stranger recordings public, posting the audio files and the spectrograms on its website alongside the whale calls and the seaquakes. That decision was ordinary science communication, and it is the reason the Bloop ever left the building.

To understand why the signal mattered, it helps to know the instruments that caught it. During the Cold War the United States Navy laid a secret network of hydrophones across the seafloor called SOSUS, the Sound Surveillance System, built to track the propellers of Soviet submarines across entire ocean basins. After the Cold War, NOAA gained access to that network and added autonomous hydrophones of its own, including the Equatorial Pacific array, to listen for undersea earthquakes, submarine volcanoes and the long songs of whales. The people reading those screens were among the world's leading specialists in the sounds of the ocean. They knew what a seaquake looked like on a spectrogram, what a ship sounded like, what a blue whale traced. The Bloop matched none of it.

The source was fixed to a remote and empty quarter of the South Pacific, at roughly 50 degrees south and 100 degrees west, far from any shipping lane and far from any coast. Christopher Fox, the NOAA researcher who oversaw the array, observed that the way the signal varied over its length had a roughly organic character, closer to an animal call than to a geological event. He was careful with the observation, and he attached a very large problem to it.

To be detected that clearly at that range, the Bloop had to be far louder than any creature known to science, louder than the blue whale, which produces the most powerful voice ever measured in a living animal. For the profile to be biological, the source would have to be a giant beyond anything ever catalogued. That was the sentence that traveled: biological in character, and too loud for any known animal.

The story spread quickly across the young internet. Readers noticed that the estimated origin lay in the same broad stretch of the South Pacific where H.P. Lovecraft had placed R'lyeh, the sunken city of his fictional god Cthulhu, and the coincidence of fiction and coordinates was retold until the Bloop became one of the best known mysteries online.

Inside the laboratory the work went in a different direction, because the Bloop was never alone. Through the 1990s the same NOAA stations logged a set of unexplained sounds and gave them nicknames that read like the index of a bestiary: Upsweep, Whistle, Train, Slow Down and Julia. One after another, most of them were traced not to biology but to the machinery of the planet. Upsweep was tied to underwater volcanic activity. Julia, recorded in 1999, was judged most likely to be an enormous iceberg run aground somewhere off the Antarctic coast. Slow Down carried the long, decelerating signature of ice dragging over rock.

Fox himself named ice as a likely source of the Bloop as early as 2001. Over the following decade NOAA moved hydrophones south, closer to Antarctica, and the recordings settled the question. Instead of a single Bloop, the instruments captured a flood of signals sharing its exact acoustic character, and their source was unmistakable: icequakes.

The mechanism is well understood. When Antarctic ice shelves crack, fracture and calve icebergs into the sea, the tearing of ice on that colossal scale releases a burst of acoustic energy known as a cryoseism. The rising frequency and the enormous volume both follow from the physics of the fracture itself, and neither requires a living source.

The reason such a sound can be heard an ocean away is the SOFAR channel, a deep layer of water in which the speed of sound reaches a minimum and low frequency energy becomes trapped and guided. Sound that enters that channel travels for thousands of kilometres with very little loss, which is why hydrophones 5,000 kilometres apart registered the same event within moments of each other.

In 2012 the oceanographer Robert Dziak and colleagues at NOAA stated that the Bloop was consistent with a large icequake, with the source most likely between the Bransfield Strait and the Ross Sea, and with Cape Adare a well known producer of such signals. Acoustic tracking of individual icebergs supported the conclusion. The break up of the giant iceberg A53a near South Georgia in 2008 produced spectrograms that were, in effect, twins of the 1997 recording. NOAA now lists the Bloop as the sound of ice.

One further fact belongs in the record. The famous audio clip that almost everyone has heard is the recording played at sixteen times its real speed. At natural speed the Bloop is not a cry at all but a low, grinding rumble stretched across a full minute, the sound of a mountain of ice breaking apart at the bottom of the world. And in the decades of listening since 1997, the hydrophones have never once recorded anything that requires a biological explanation.

Conclusions and Open Questions

The unknown giant animal theory, favoured by cryptozoologists and by most of the popular retelling, has one genuine strength. The signal did rise and vary in a way that resembled a call, and the deep ocean remains the least explored environment on the planet, so unknown large animals are not impossible in principle. Its weakness is decisive, and it is made of physics and silence together. The volume required has no plausible living source, and after decades of intensive listening no carcass, no sighting, no photograph and no second recording of a comparable creature call has ever appeared.

A military or submarine origin, proposed occasionally in the early discussion, fails on both volume and shape. No submarine or surface vessel produces a rising, minute long, ocean crossing rumble, and no navy would have a reason to build one that did.

A submarine volcano or seafloor eruption was for several years the sober default among geologists, and it matched the raw power well. What it never matched was the precise varying signature, which does not sit inside the known catalogue of volcanic noise. Ice fits that signature. Volcanoes do not.

The Lovecraft connection, still the most repeated element of the story, carries no evidentiary content at all. R'lyeh is a location in a work of fiction published in 1928, and the correspondence with the estimated source position is loose at best. It explains the popularity of the legend rather than the origin of the sound.

What remains genuinely open is narrower than the legend, but it is not trivial. No single named calving or fracture event has ever been matched to the 1997 signal, so the Bloop is explained as a type of event rather than identified as one particular one. Some argue that the distance between the original position estimate and the Antarctic source region is uncomfortably large, and that reconciling them depends on models of how sound is guided and refracted over thousands of kilometres rather than on a direct fix. Others note that not every entry in the NOAA bestiary closed as cleanly as Upsweep and Slow Down did; Whistle and Train are still attributed with far less confidence than the Bloop is.

Two questions follow from all of this. If icequakes on this scale were reaching the Pacific arrays in 1997, how many earlier signals in the SOSUS archive were filed as anomalies and never revisited? And why does a correction travel so much more slowly than the story it corrects? The clip almost everyone has heard is still the sped up version, still described as a creature, more than a decade after the ice explanation was published and more than twenty years after ice was first proposed. The Bloop is one of the rare cases in which a mystery received a real, physical, confirmed answer. What has not been solved is why the answer has never quite replaced the monster.
