They had gone out for bingo and ended up eating late instead, and now they were driving home through the pine woods on a two lane road east of Houston. It was the evening of December 29, 1980, a little before nine o'clock. Betty Cash, fifty one, was at the wheel of her Oldsmobile Cutlass. Beside her sat Vickie Landrum, fifty seven, who worked for her, and in the back was Vickie's seven year old grandson Colby. The road, FM 1485 near Dayton, Texas, runs through dense woodland with almost nothing on either side.

Colby saw it first. A light was moving above the treetops ahead of them.
