Nikola Tesla spent the last ten years of his life in a single room on the thirty third floor of the Hotel New Yorker, an art deco tower on Eighth Avenue in Manhattan. Room 3327 was small, plain and quiet. The man who lived in it was eighty six years old, painfully thin, and almost completely alone.
He had not always lived like that. Tesla arrived in the United States in 1884 and became a naturalized American citizen in 1891. He designed the alternating current system that still carries electricity into nearly every building on the planet. His induction motor turned the machinery of the industrial age. His name was attached to the first great hydroelectric project at Niagara Falls, and for a stretch of the 1890s he was one of the most famous scientific figures in the world.
