The Zone of Silence: How a Lost American Missile Built Mexico's Strangest Legend

Where Durango, Chihuahua and Coahuila meet, the Chihuahuan Desert flattens into a closed basin called the Bolson de Mapimi. No river leaves it: rain that falls here stays until it evaporates. The ground was once the floor of an arm of the ancient Tethys sea, and it still holds marine fossils and salt deposits mined to this day. The nearest town of any size is Ceballos, in Durango, about forty kilometres away across creosote scrub. In the popular imagination it carries a very specific one: la Zona del Silencio.

The name is not ancient. It appears to date from 1966, when an engineer named Harry de la Pena, surveying for the state oil company Pemex, reported that radio traffic died out over one stretch of the basin. He called it the zone of silence, the phrase reached print, and it stuck. Older claims circulate too, usually about pilots in the 1930s said to have lost contact crossing the region. Those stories have no contemporary documentation and belong to folklore rather than to the record.

Then, in the small hours of 8 February 1969, the desert produced something entirely real. A fireball crossed the sky and broke up over northern Mexico, and the people of Ceballos were woken by the noise. The stones that came down near Pueblito de Allende, in Chihuahua, became the Allende meteorite. More than two tonnes were collected, making it the largest carbonaceous chondrite ever recovered on Earth. Its pale inclusions, rich in calcium and aluminium, contain some of the oldest solid material in the solar system, dated to roughly 4.567 billion years. The timing was extraordinary in another way: laboratories worldwide were preparing to receive the first Apollo lunar samples, and Allende arrived as a free rehearsal.

Seventeen months later the desert received a second visitor from the sky, and this one had a return address.

At 2:40 in the morning on 11 July 1970, the United States Air Force launched an Athena RTV research rocket, vehicle number 122, from the Green River Launch Complex in Utah. The flight was routine: Green River to White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico, a corridor used for years. This time the fourth stage motor ignited before the mid-course guidance manoeuvre, a single fault that added roughly four hundred nautical miles of range. Instead of falling in New Mexico, the vehicle carried on south and came down deep inside Mexico, in the northeast corner of Durango.

The payload was why the incident could not be quietly forgotten. The vehicle carried two small sealed containers of cobalt-57, a radioactive isotope used as a tracer so the debris could be located after impact. American officials stated the sealed capsules posed no danger. They also wanted them back.

Mexico granted permission. Teams left for the border on 16 July and set up at Torreon. The search was led by Lieutenant Colonel Lowell Knight, known as Buzz, with project engineer Carlos Bustamante, a fluent Spanish speaker, handling contact with Mexican officials and ranchers. Ground parties found nothing for weeks in country that swallows objects whole. The nose cone was finally located on 2 August from the air, by an Atomic Energy Commission aircraft flying the Aerial Radiological Measuring System, its detectors tuned to the signature of cobalt-57.

The recovery was a separate operation, and a large one. Operation Sand Patch ran from 23 September to 7 October 1970 under Colonel Thomas Kearns. A train left Orogrande on 23 September and reached the Mexican railhead at Carrillo the next day. Engineers pushed a road across the desert to the impact site. Crews scraped the contaminated ground and drummed it: by 1 October sixty drums of soil were filled and on their way back to White Sands. Initial readings at the site were around six tenths of a millirem per hour, comparable to what is measured at the Trinity Site today. The Mexican government asked that it be brought down to half a millirem or less. The whole operation cost about 104,000 dollars.

For a few weeks in 1970, a corner of desert that saw almost no outsiders had American soldiers in it, a railhead, a new road, trucks, aircraft overhead and men in protective gear filling barrels with dirt. Local people were hired for support work, including at least one man to guard the crash debris. In several accounts the stories began to travel outward from precisely that circle: that the Americans had come for something they would not name, that radios did not work out there, that compasses spun, that plants and animals were changing. The Athena crash is the one part of the legend documented down to the drum count. Almost everything attached to it afterwards is not.

The desert acquired very different visitors soon after. In 1977 UNESCO recognised the Mapimi Biosphere Reserve under its Man and the Biosphere programme, one of the first in Mexico and Latin America, and on 5 June 1978 a permanent research station, the Laboratorio del Desierto, was inaugurated inside it. The reserve had been created above all for one animal: Gopherus flavomarginatus, the bolson tortoise, the largest land reptile in North America, endemic to this basin. Gustavo Aguirre arrived at the end of 1977 to study it. It is administered today by Mexico's national protected areas commission, CONANP.

That station matters: it means the Zone of Silence has been continuously occupied by scientists for almost fifty years. They use radios. They use compasses. A researcher who did doctoral fieldwork in the reserve summarised the position bluntly: neither he nor anyone he spoke to, apart from the zoneros, had any trouble with radios or compasses while working there. Zoneros is the local word for guides and enthusiasts who live off the mystery.

Both versions of the place now run side by side. An ecotourism complex sits on the highway between Jimenez and Gomez Palacio, between Ceballos in Durango and Escalon in Chihuahua. There is a visitor centre in the tiny ejido of La Flor, in a building put up in revolutionary-era style, and a small museum on the basin's flora and fauna alongside the curiosities the zone is famous for. Guides show visitors fossils, meteorite fragments and the purple prickly pear that grows here. Some of them will also tell you to switch on your radio and listen to nothing.

Conclusions and Open Questions

The Zone of Silence is one of the few modern legends whose birth certificate survives. The missile came down on 11 July 1970. The recovery ran to 7 October. The costs, the drum counts and the radiation readings are on file. What is not on file is any measurement showing radio waves behave abnormally in the Bolson de Mapimi.

The mainstream position, held by reserve staff and most scientists who have worked there, is that the silence is folklore: an ordinary desert given an extraordinary reputation by an unusual few months in 1970, then kept alive because the reputation earns money. Its weakness is chronological. De la Pena reported radio problems in 1966, four years before the Athena flight and long before any tourism, and that report is the seed of the whole thing.

One theory takes the 1966 report seriously and explains it in ordinary terms. Shortwave and VHF communications in remote country fail for mundane reasons: distance from the nearest repeater, terrain shadowing by the surrounding sierras, hourly changes in ionospheric conditions, poor or badly tuned field equipment. The weakness of this explanation is that nobody wrote down the frequency, the equipment or the conditions, so it cannot be checked. It is plausible rather than proven.

Another theory looks to the ground. Some researchers have proposed that magnetite-bearing soils, buried iron or the salt beds of the old seabed generate local magnetic anomalies. The weakness here is one of scale. No published survey has found anomalies anywhere near strong enough to block radio transmission, and an anomaly of the required size would be one of the most conspicuous geophysical features in North America rather than a rumour.

The claim that the zone attracts meteorites is folklore built on a real event. Allende did fall here in 1969, and meteorites are indeed found in the basin. But deserts everywhere are the best places on Earth to find meteorites: the ground is dry, pale and unvegetated, stones from the sky stay recognisable for millennia, and people go looking there because they know it. No mechanism of attraction has ever been proposed that survives inspection, and the same claim is made in the same words about the Sahara and the ice fields of Antarctica.

Some argue for stranger readings, and they should be labelled as open theories rather than findings. One holds that the zone sits on a band of latitude shared with the Bermuda Triangle and certain ancient monuments; its weakness is that a shared latitude is a coincidence, not a mechanism, and the argument chooses its examples after the fact. Another holds that the recovery was cover for something else, or that lingering cobalt-57 explains the reported oddities in local plants and animals. That one has a fatal problem: cobalt-57 has a half life of about 271 days. Whatever was not scraped into those sixty drums decayed to nothing within a few years of 1970.

What remains genuinely unexplained is smaller than the legend but not nothing. Nobody knows what de la Pena's crew actually experienced in 1966, and no one appears to have gone back with modern equipment to test the same ground on the same frequencies. Nobody has published a systematic radio propagation study of the basin, which would settle the central claim in a week. And nobody has measured whether the plant oddities visitors are shown, the purple prickly pear among them, are anything but the ordinary drought and cold stress pigmentation of Chihuahuan Desert species.

The open questions are practical. Will anyone run that propagation survey and publish it? Are there residual traces of the 1970 impact outside the drummed area, and has the site been resurveyed since? And how much of the Zone of Silence would remain if the road the US Army built in September 1970 had never been cut across the desert?
