Julie Otero drove her children to school on the morning of 15 January 1974, the same as every other morning.

She was thirty-three. Her husband Joseph was thirty-eight, a retired Air Force man who had moved the family to Wichita from Panama a few months earlier and taken work as a flight instructor. There were five children. That morning the three eldest went to school and the two youngest stayed home: Joey, who was nine, and Josephine, who was eleven and went by Josie.
