The Short One of Kerinci: A Century of Sightings, and Still No Body
In Indonesian the name is a flat description rather than a legend. Orang pendek means "short person." For more than a century in the written record, and for far longer in local accounts, people who live and work in the rainforests of Sumatra have used those two words for an animal they say walks upright on two legs, stands roughly 80 to 150 centimetres tall, and is covered in short hair ranging from honey brown to near black. Witnesses describe it as broad across the shoulders, heavy through the chest, with short legs and long arms. It is rarely described as a monster. It is described as an ape that lives on the ground rather than in the canopy.
Almost all modern reports come from one region. Kerinci Seblat National Park runs along the Bukit Barisan mountains in central Sumatra and covers more than a million hectares of rainforest across four provinces. It holds Sumatran tigers, sun bears, tapirs and clouded leopards, and it is also the place where farmers, forest guards, trappers and visiting biologists have reported the same small upright figure crossing a trail and vanishing into cover.
The forest peoples of the region, including the Suku Anak Dalam, also known as the Orang Rimba, have accounts that long predate any European record. In some of them the being is called hantu pendek, the short one of the forest, and is understood as a presence rather than a specimen: it moves in groups, it digs wild yams, it is to be left alone. That is not a garbled attempt at zoology. It is a separate body of knowledge with its own categories, held by people who distinguish carefully between spirit and animal, and it deserves to be reported as they give it.
The written trail begins with the Dutch. Sumatra was under Dutch colonial administration, and from the late nineteenth century onward planters, hunters, road engineers and government surveyors filed reports of a small hairy biped. In 1918 L. C. Westenenk, then governor of Sumatra's West Coast, published a summary of an encounter described to him by a Padang man supervising a road crew near the Barisan range in 1910. The account was short, unsensational, and repeated the same details later reports would repeat: small, upright, hairy, gone in seconds.
The most quoted colonial account is from October 1923. A Dutch official named van Herwaarden was surveying land in the Koeboestreken district of southern Sumatra, on Poeloe Rimau, and was out hunting wild pig when he says he watched one of the animals at close range for several minutes. His description, published in the natural history journal De Tropische Natuur in 1924, is unusually specific. He recorded very dark hair falling to below the shoulder blades and almost to the waist, arms that reached to a little above the knees, and a face that he insisted was neither repulsive nor particularly apelike. He did not shoot. That refusal, which he explained afterwards in almost apologetic terms, is the reason the case has no ending.
For the next sixty years the subject stayed where colonial anecdote usually stays: repeated, embellished, never tested. That changed in 1989, when an English travel writer named Debbie Martyr came to Sumatra and camped on Mount Kerinci. Her guide mentioned the orang pendek in passing, as a local animal rather than a wonder. Martyr says that in 1990 she saw it herself. Rather than write it up and leave, she stayed.
In the early 1990s Martyr and the British wildlife photographer Jeremy Holden began a systematic field project funded by Fauna and Flora International. The design was conventional: collect eyewitness accounts under standard interview conditions, map the sightings, cast any tracks, and saturate the most productive areas with camera traps in the hope of a photograph. The project ran for roughly fifteen years.
It produced a great deal. Martyr and Holden accumulated hundreds of interviews, a set of footprint casts they considered unmatched by any local species, and thousands of camera-trap images of Sumatran wildlife. What it did not produce was a single photograph of an orang pendek. Martyr later moved into tiger conservation and went on to head the Tiger Protection and Conservation Unit in Kerinci Seblat, work for which she was appointed to the Order of the British Empire. The camera traps stayed empty of the animal she had gone there to find.
The best-known physical evidence came from a different group. In 2001 a British team including Adam Davies, Keith Townley and Andrew Sanderson worked in the Kerinci area and came back with hair samples and a cast of a footprint. Over the following two years the material was passed to specialists.
Hans Brunner, an Australian mammal hair analyst whose comparative work is used in forensic casework, compared the hairs against reference material from local animals and known primates. His conclusion was that they came from a primate he could not match to any documented species. David Chivers, a primate biologist at the University of Cambridge, examined the footprint cast and reported that it was definitely an ape, showing a blend of features found separately in gibbons, orangutans, chimpanzees and humans, and matching no known primate.
The DNA did not cooperate. Todd Disotell, a biological anthropologist then at New York University, ran the hairs and found human DNA and nothing else. He was careful about what that meant. Human sequence in a sample handled by humans is exactly what contamination looks like, and if the original DNA had degraded in a hot, wet forest before reaching a laboratory, contaminating human material is what would be left to amplify. The result was not a refutation. It was a null. Later expeditions sent further material to laboratories in Europe and North America, and none has produced a sequence that identifies a new primate.
That leaves the honest position, and it is not complicated. There is no orang pendek specimen. There are no bones, no body, no confirmed photograph and no genetic sequence. Under the rules of zoological nomenclature a new species has to be founded on a type specimen held in a collection, so the orang pendek has no scientific name and no scientific standing.
The context, though, is not nothing. Sumatra has kept producing new large animals into living memory. On 2 November 2017 a paper in Current Biology described Pongo tapanuliensis, the Tapanuli orangutan, from the Batang Toru forest in North Sumatra: a third orangutan species, genetically and morphologically distinct, and the first new great ape described in almost a century. Fewer than 800 individuals are thought to survive, which made it the most endangered great ape on Earth on the day it was named. It had been living on an island with roads, satellites and tens of millions of people, unrecognised.
Conclusions and Open Questions
The competing explanations divide cleanly, and each carries a weakness its supporters have not closed.
The unknown ape hypothesis is the position of the field workers. Martyr and Holden both maintained after fifteen years that they had seen a real animal, and the position is supported by Chivers reading the cast as ape and Brunner failing to place the hair. Its weakness is severe: camera traps are now widespread in Kerinci Seblat, deployed for tiger monitoring by teams who would recognise anything unusual, and a ground-dwelling diurnal ape should have walked in front of one by now.
The sun bear explanation is the standard skeptical answer, usually raised by zoologists reviewing the case from a distance. Helarctos malayanus is common in Kerinci, has shaggy dark fur, and does briefly stand and walk on its hind legs. Its weakness is the witness list. Many reports come from people who share the forest with sun bears and hunt around them, plus a small number of trained biologists, and a bear also leaves clawed bear tracks.
The misidentified primate explanation nominates the agile gibbon, the siamang, or a displaced orangutan. Its weakness is anatomy and behaviour. Gibbons and siamangs are arboreal brachiators that cross open ground rarely and awkwardly, which does not fit repeated descriptions of comfortable habitual walking, and wild Sumatran orangutans live far to the north.
The cultural explanation holds that a real and old body of forest belief shapes how a two-second glimpse is described afterwards. This is the most serious skeptical argument, because expectation genuinely does structure memory. Its weakness is that it accounts for testimony and not for objects. It does not explain a cast that a Cambridge primatologist read as ape, or hair that a forensic analyst could not place.
Then there is the open theory, and it should be labelled as exactly that. After Homo floresiensis, the small-bodied hominin described from the island of Flores in 2004, some writers began asking whether the orang pendek could be a surviving relative of something similar. Nothing supports this in Sumatra. There is no fossil, no dated deposit, no site. It is a hypothesis generated by analogy, and it is worth stating only because it is testable in principle.
What genuinely remains unexplained is narrow but real: a footprint cast that two specialists could not assign to a known animal, hair that a comparative analyst could not match, and a description that has stayed stable across a century, across languages, and across witnesses with no contact with one another.
The open questions are practical. Why, after three decades of intensive camera trapping in Kerinci Seblat, is there still not one frame? Is the animal far rarer and more range-restricted than the sighting map suggests, or is there nothing to photograph? The 2001 hair was sequenced with the technology of its time, and it is fair to ask whether any of it survives in storage and what a modern high-throughput protocol with proper anti-contamination controls would return. Environmental DNA sampling now routinely detects rare mammals from soil and water, yet no systematic eDNA survey of the Kerinci highlands has been published. That test could be run on a modest budget and would answer the question either way. Until someone runs it, the orang pendek stays where it has been since 1923: too consistently described to dismiss, and too poorly evidenced to accept.
