The Perfect Stone Spheres a Banana Company Found by Accident

In the 1930s the United Fruit Company was cutting new banana plantations out of the forest of the Diquis Delta, in the Pacific lowlands of southern Costa Rica. Crews with machetes, fire and heavy machinery pushed into ground that had not been cleared in centuries. What came out of it was not expected. Half buried in the earth, scattered through the delta of the Terraba and Sierpe rivers and out on the offshore Isla del Cano, were stone balls. Not roughly rounded boulders, but spheres, worked to a curvature so even that a hand run across the surface finds almost nothing to catch on.

They came in every size. The smallest are only a few centimetres across and can be held in one hand. The largest recorded example measures about 2.57 metres in diameter, taller than the men who found it, with weight estimates running from roughly 15 tonnes upward depending on the stone and the source consulted. More than three hundred are known, and the true original number was certainly higher. Most were carved from a hard, dark igneous rock described in the literature as gabbro or granodiorite; about a dozen each are known in shell-rich limestone and in sandstone. The igneous stone does not occur where the spheres were found. It had to be brought from hills several kilometres away, across broken country and river channels, without wheels and without draft animals.

The first scholarly account came from Doris Stone, the daughter of a United Fruit Company executive, who grew up around the plantations and became a serious student of Central American archaeology. In 1943 she published an article describing the spheres and the circumstances of their discovery. Her report reached Samuel Kirkland Lothrop, an archaeologist at Harvard, and Stone directed him to the Diquis Delta. Lothrop began fieldwork in the region in the late 1940s and continued for years, culminating in his 1963 monograph Archaeology of the Diquis Delta, Costa Rica, which remains the foundation of the subject.

Lothrop recorded something that has haunted the field ever since. Many of the spheres, he reported, were not sitting at random. They lay in groups arranged as straight lines, as curved lines, and as triangles and parallelograms, sometimes in sets of three, four or more. Whether these arrangements pointed at anything, or simply framed spaces, he could not establish. What matters is that by the time he was recording them, the arrangements were already being destroyed.

The destruction is the second great fact of this story, and it is worse than casual. Plantation bulldozers shoved spheres out of the way to clear planting rows. Rumours spread among workers that the balls were hollow and held gold, so men drilled holes into them and split them open with dynamite. Others were hauled off as ornaments and ended up on lawns, in plazas, in front of government buildings and in private gardens in San Jose and elsewhere. Only a minority of the known spheres are still standing where the people who made them put them. Every sphere moved is a sphere whose meaning was erased, because in archaeology the position of an object carries as much information as the object itself. Measurements of alignments made decades ago can no longer be checked in the field, because the field no longer exists.

The people who made them are known to archaeology as the Diquis culture, a name taken from the region. The relevant occupation spans the Aguas Buenas period, roughly 300 to 800 of our era, and the Chiriqui period, roughly 800 to 1550, with most sphere production placed in the later part of that range. These were chiefdom societies: settled villages with ranked leadership, mounds, paved areas, stone-lined graves and long-distance exchange in gold and jade. They left no writing. And although Spanish soldiers, priests and administrators wrote a great deal about Costa Rica after contact, no surviving colonial document describes the spheres or the people who made them. The tradition had ended, and the knowledge with it, before Europeans thought to ask.

Serious modern investigation began late. Between roughly 1990 and 1996 the Costa Rican archaeologist Ifigenia Quintanilla directed sustained fieldwork in the Sierpe and Terraba region for the National Museum of Costa Rica, studying settlement patterns, occupation sequences and the resources local people used. John Hoopes, an archaeologist at the University of Kansas specialising in southern Central America, has worked on the spheres since 1990. Their generation produced the first evidence of context that had not been bulldozed. At Finca 6, spheres were documented flanking the entrance ramp of a raised house platform, in pairs, exactly the way a doorway is framed. Small spheres, some only a few centimetres across, have been recovered from graves, which suggests the form meant something at a personal scale as well as a monumental one.

In June 2014 UNESCO inscribed the Precolumbian Chiefdom Settlements with Stone Spheres of the Diquis on the World Heritage List, the first cultural site in Costa Rica to receive that status. The inscription covers four sites in the delta: Finca 6, Batambal, El Silencio and Grijalba-2. They preserve artificial mounds, paved surfaces, burial areas and, crucially, spheres still in the ground where they were placed. Finca 6 now operates as an archaeological park and museum. Costa Rica has banned the export of the spheres since the 1980s, and in 2022 a conservation programme carried out with Mexican technical support began restoring damaged examples. The spheres have become a national emblem. They remain unexplained.

Conclusions and Open Questions

The manufacturing question has a partial answer. The accepted reconstruction, built on unfinished spheres left at quarry and workshop sites, is that boulders of igneous rock were reduced by pecking and hammering with harder handheld stones, then ground and polished with sand and water until the surface was smooth and the curvature even. Heat and rapid cooling to spall off flakes has also been proposed. The weakness is that nobody has demonstrated the full process at the top end of the scale. Producing a two and a half metre sphere accurate to within a few centimetres, using only stone tools and no measuring instruments, is a control problem, not just a labour problem. How the carvers checked their own work, whether with a swinging cord from a fixed centre, a template, or simply an extraordinarily trained eye, has never been shown experimentally on a large sphere.

The meaning question is more open. The strongest evidence-based reading, supported by Quintanilla's and Hoopes's field results, is that spheres were markers of rank and territory, placed at the entrances and within the compounds of important people, with size signalling status. Its weakness is coverage: this fits the handful of undisturbed contexts at Finca 6 but cannot account for the hundreds of spheres whose settings were destroyed before anyone recorded them.

Lothrop's alignments underpin the astronomical reading, in which sphere groups marked sunrise positions on significant days. The weakness here is fatal to proof rather than to plausibility: almost all the alignments were dismantled before modern instruments could be applied, so the measurements cannot be repeated. Hoopes has framed a broader interpretation, arguing that in shaping river-worn stone into perfect form the makers were claiming a share of nature's power, and that the spheres functioned as objects of magical or cosmological weight. That reading is coherent with the archaeology, but it is interpretive and not directly testable.

Several open theories remain in circulation among researchers: that the spheres represent celestial bodies, that they echo the eggs of sea turtles that nest on the nearby Pacific coast, that they encode chiefly lineages, or that different sizes formed a graded political code across the delta. None has been ruled out. None has been demonstrated.

Two popular claims should be marked clearly as rejected by archaeologists. The first is the Atlantis thesis advanced by Ivar Zapp and George Erikson, who drew lines through pairs of spheres and connected them to Stonehenge, Giza and Easter Island as the navigational apparatus of a lost civilisation; specialists have pointed out that the underlying position measurements were imprecise, and that error alone destroys the geometry. The second is the ancient astronaut speculation that spread after Erich von Daniken's 1971 book. Neither is supported by any excavation, and both ignore an inconvenient fact: the tools, quarries, workshops and unfinished spheres of the people who actually made them are documented on the ground.

The open questions are concrete. How many spheres existed before the plantations arrived, and how many were dynamited? Can any original alignment be reconstructed from old photographs and plantation records? Was sphere size a formal indicator of rank? What routes were used to move fifteen tonnes of stone across a river delta? And why did a tradition that lasted centuries stop entirely, leaving not one line of description in the colonial record?
