The Hessdalen Lights: The Valley Where Science Chases Glowing Orbs

2025-10-22 · Signals & Sounds · 2 min read

Hessdalen is a narrow valley in central Norway, about 120 kilometres south of Trondheim — barely fifteen kilometres long, home to a few hundred people. It would be entirely unremarkable if not for one thing: for decades, glowing balls of light have appeared over its hillsides. They hover, drift, flash and sometimes shoot through the valley at startling speed. Locals say strange lights were seen there as far back as the 1930s, long before anyone spoke of UFOs.

The phenomenon exploded into public view in December 1981, when an intense wave of sightings began. At its peak, between 1981 and 1984, residents reported the lights up to twenty times a week. They were seen by farmers, bus drivers and police officers; some were photographed. The lights ranged from small flashes to luminous shapes estimated at several metres across, appearing in white, yellow and occasionally red or blue.
